When it comes to maintaining a water filtration system, one of the most common questions we hear is: “How often should I replace my prefilter?”
Across the internet, you’ll see recommendations ranging from every 3 months to 6 months, sometimes even up to a year. These can be helpful as broad guidelines, but the reality is more complex. At Nissel Everpure, we believe in providing clarity based on how filtration truly works, not just rules of thumb.
There’s No One-Size-Fits-All Answer
A prefilter’s lifespan varies widely depending on:
The configuration of your filtration system
Whether you have an outdoor filtration stage
Your usage environment: home, office, café, or commercial setup
And most critically, the water quality in your specific area
Across Malaysia, water conditions differ dramatically from one state to another and even from one neighbourhood to the next. This variability makes understanding your prefilter’s role far more important than following fixed timelines.
What Exactly Does a Prefilter Do?
Think of the prefilter as your system’s first line of defence. Its purpose is simple yet essential: to capture sediments, rust, sand, and larger particulates before the water enters the primary Everpure cartridge.
In systems like our Everpure Coldrink Series, the prefilter is positioned on the far left for a reason. It acts as a gatekeeper, ensuring that coarse contaminants never reach the finer, more sophisticated filtration media inside your main cartridges.
The result?
Better system performance
Cleaner water
And a longer lifespan for your primary Everpure cartridges
In other words, this simple and affordable component plays a crucial role in protecting the investment you’ve made in high-performance filtration.
So When Should You Replace the Prefilter?
Here’s what we recommend at Nissel Everpure:
1. Use 3 Months as a General Baseline
This is a broad guideline for moderate usage and average water quality.
2. Pressure Gauge Method (Most Accurate)
Record the pressure when the prefilter is newly installed. When the outlet pressure drops 15–20 psi from the original reading, it’s time to replace it.
3. Visual and Performance Indicators
If the prefilter starts to resemble a mocha latte, it’s saturated with sediment.
If your water flow drops noticeably, the prefilter may be restricting flow.
